Time Sensitive Changes to Teacher Certification

Read about important and time-sensitive changes to Teacher Certification!!!!

The new Teacher Act was proclaimed on November 14, 2011 and dissolves the BC College of Teachers and brings in a new system to regulate, certify and discipline teachers in BC. The new act allows for only one category of certification – practising whereas the previous Act also provided for inactive or retired membership. Practising membership is $120 while inactive or retired was $60.

During the transition period, from now to January 6, 2012, teachers and retired administrators who hold inactive or retired membership in the College need to take action if they wish to stay certified!

For any person who currently holds an inactive or retired membership in the College of Teachers, you will need to “top-up” to practicing status by paying an additional fee ($60). If you do not do so, you will lose your teaching certificate as of January 6, 2012. If you lose your teaching certificate because you do not pay the practicing fee on time, you would have to reapply for your certificate and meet all the current requirements for certification.

For information click or see the “What’s New” section at www.BCCT.ca. The increased fee amount of $60 can be paid online by following the links and prompts.

Please alert those you know who may need to know this information as the timeline is very short.
